Die Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen hatte sich am 29. November 1947 für die Teilung Palästinas in einen jüdischen und einen arabischen Staat ausgesprochen.
Die jüdische Gemeinde Palästinas hat diesen Entschluß akzeptiert, während ihn die arabische Seite abgelehnt hat.
Kurz nach dem Teilungsbeschluß sind in Palästina Feindseligkeiten ausgebrochen. Mit der Ausrufung des Staates Israel am 14. Mai 1948 kam es zum Krieg zwischen Israel und ihren arabischen Nachbarstaaten.
Die UN haben Graf Folke Bernadotte, den Leiter des Schwedischen Roten Kreuzes, als Sonderbeauftragten für Palästina benannt, um zwischen den Konfliktparteien in Palästina zu vermitteln.
Die militante jüdische Untergrundorganisation “Lechi“* ermordete Graf Bernadotte am 17. September 1948.

ISRAELI ARMY TAKES SWIFT ACTION TO WIPE OUT DISSIDENT MURDERERS OF BERNADOTTE
The Israel Government took swift action yesterday to trace the murderers of Count Bernadotte, who was killed in Jerusalem on Friday afternoon by men disguised in the uniform of the Israeli Army.
Count Bernadotte and a French Observer, Colonel Andre Serot, were murdered as they drove from Government House to an appointment with the Military Governor of Jerusalem.
Widespread searches were carried out, L.H.Y.** bases were raided and over 201 suspects were arrested.
All ports and airfields in the country were closed, as were roads leading out of Jerusalem, where a 15-hour curfew was imposed, ending at 5 o’clock this morning.
While the I.Z.L. disclaimed all connection with the crime, responsibility for it was claimed by a croup calling itself “Fatherland Front” which an official spokesman described as a sham splinter group of the L.H.Y.
The intention of the Government to root out the dissidents was clearly expressed in the Army’s firm reaction yesterday, and was backed by the unanimous condemnation of the killing of the distinguished representative of the United Nations.
Both the Israel Cabinet in Tel Aviv and the Security Council in Paris met in special session, and the U.N. staff in Haifa announced that the Mediator’s work would go on with Dr. Bunche*** acting as Mediator.

GOVERNMENT WILL USE ALL FORCE AT ITS COMMAND
TEL AVIV, Saturday. — The Government of Israel issued the following statement today:
The Government of Israel is outraged by the appalling crime committed yesterday in Jerusalem, when the Mediator, Count Bernadotte and his assistant Colonel Serot were assassinated within the area under the control and defence of State of Israel.
This murder is an attack on the authority of the U.N. and a calculated assault on the sovereignty at the State of Israel.
It is an act of treachery against the Israel Defence Army.
It is a desecration of the unity of Jerusalem.
The Government of Israel will use all the force at its command to suppress the insane attempt by gunmen to wreck Israels relations with the UN.
The perpetrators of this crime are traitors to the people and enemies of its liberty.
The Government is mobilizing the entire force of the state to track down the murderers and their accomplices and bring them to Justice.
It will uproot the criminal gang responsible for the outrage.
The government calls on the nation to rise as one man against the enemy within its midst.
Every citizen and resident of Israel will give active and unhesitating assistance to the Army and Police in apprehending the assassins and their accomplices and expunging the stain of terrorism from the soil of our country.
David Ben Gurion als der erste Mann im Staat sah die militanten Splittergruppen und damit den Lechi als politische Konkurrenz und Gefahr.
Insofern war die in der Palestine Post abgedruckte Erklärung durchaus ernst gemeint.
Im Laufe des Kriegs änderten sich allerdings die Prioritäten: Man wollte, konnte keine inner-jüdische Spaltung riskieren.
Die Forderungen und Vorschläge von Folke Bernadotte, die zu seinem Tod führten – insbesondere das von ihm formulierte Recht der geflohenen oder vertriebenen Palästinenser auf Rückkehr- wurde ohnehin von keiner der israelischen Parteien gut geheißen.
Die Ermordung eines UN-Gesandten war unangenehm, hatte aber keine innenpolitische Sprengkraft.
Ben Gurion gewährte den Attentätern später Amnestie.

* Der Lechi war schon zuvor mitverantwortlich für das Massaker von Deir Jassin. Zur Lechi-Gruppe gehörte auch der spätere israelische Ministerpräsident Jitzchak Shamir.
